Any helpful tips?

Alright ya'll, I need some help.

Abigail has had a 102 fever since Saturday afternoon, but for the most part has been acting like her happy self. She slept terrible Saturday night, but slept okay last night. She's a little clingy today, but otherwise just fine. She has no other symptoms (no runny nose, no rash, not puking, etc), but I called the ped this morning to just check in, and she is worried about a possible UTI.

So, now I have to try and catch a clean urine sample.

How on earth do I do this with a 14 month old girl?

If I can't catch one today, they will cath her at our appointment tomorrow morning. I will pretty much do anything to avoid having to hold my baby girl down while they do that, so I'm open to any suggestions you all can offer me.

Have any of you been successful at doing this?

Thanks.

***UPDATE***

WE HAVE PEE IN A CUP!! CAN I GET A HALLELUJAH??!?!

It was a joint effort. Thank God my sister Emily is here visiting and my sister Natalie happened to stop by to say hello! We gave Ab's a fun waterbottle to drink out of to encourage lots of hydration, then took her diaper off and let her walk around. She was incredibly nervous being nude and diaper-less at first (let's hope this desire to be modest sticks around into the teen years), but she relaxed a bit, and finally let a stream go. We probably would have caught more but I let out a loud exclamation of joy when she started streaming and it scared her. Oops. And then we realized the container we caught it in had a hole in it. I'm not gonna lie, I swore a bit. Anyways, after a successful transfer to a better container, we've got about a teaspoon of Abbey urine in the fridge. I called the doctor and confirmed that should be plenty. I don't think I've ever been so happy to have pee all over my hardwoods. I am so relieved!!!

I have absolutely no advice, or ideas to help you catch the sample, but I'm praying for you and AM all the same....

I haven't had to do this so I'm just swinging wide into left field... any chance of using a training potty and getting her to sit there until she goes? I mean, I know she's young for that, but I really don't have any other ideas and hated to leave it without some kind of some idea even if it would never work... sorry! (for no foolproof plan and the possible UTI!)

We don't yet own a training potty...I'm more than willing to go buy one this afternoon, but I am not sure she'd sit still on it?? She doesn't sit still for anything...not movies, etc. She'll sit for books, but only for so long...

Hadley had a UTI when she was 10 months, I think. The pedi had this bag that they taped on her to catch the urine in her diaper. It didn't work, so they had to cath her. Let me just say---you do NOT want them to cath her---it was horrible. She screamed. She still cries every time the pedi takes off her diaper during the well-check-ups, b/c she remembers....

So--for my girls, if I put them in the bathtub, they usually pee immediately. Does this work with your Abbey girl? If so, I'd try to load her up with some water and then put her in the tub, and have something there to catch it. Even just a cup or bowl or something....

I'll pray that this is not what it is. Hadley acted awfully sick when she had hers, and her fever spiked to 104/105 at one point. Scary!

I have no suggestions from my own experience but I hate to think about having to cath her... maybe you could just leave her diaper off and follow her around super closely with a cup??

Sorry, they always need a urine sample from Cadence pre-op for her heart surgeries. But since the pre-op appointments are so long (chest x-ray, blood draw, EKG, etc) they just tape the plastic bag thing to her bottom and put the diaper back on and by the end of the appointment, we have a sample.

I like potty chair idea. Lots of water, perhaps a popsicle, and lots and lots of storyt time to encourage her to sit. Praying!

Good job on catching the pee!

Just wanted to throw out that both of my kids had a virus with a fever of 101 and it lasted for about 5 days. No other symptoms and the fever always came right down after Tylenol. So, might not be a UTI?

If you think getting a sample from a toddler is hard, try getting one from a cat! With my last cat, I had to wait until he had started peeing in his litter box and then slip a jar lid under him before he could stop. At least it worked. I absolutely understand the joy of a successful "catch".

I bet you were so glad to get a urine sample without the cath. My poor son ended up in the urgent care last week with a 106.2 fever - they tried to get a urine sample two times using a cath - broke my heart! Turned out he just had some virus and it just had to run its course - 3 days later he was fine! Praying she feels better soon!

Reminds me of the time we needed urine sample from Breezy. I'm a lawyer, father of five, solid citizen, and I'm taking a dog for walk with a cup, keeping a very close eye on Breezy.

I did not yell "hooray," but Breezy was a bit concerned about what I was doing back there while she was peeing.

Glad everything came out OK (pun intended).
